Discover Iconic Mauritius
Mauritius was made first, and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius." — Mark Twain
Mauritius (Ile Maurice en francais), a volcanic island called Isle de France during the French colonization (1717–1814), is the main island of the Republic of Mauritius. It is geographically attached to Africa and is located in the western Indian Ocean, in the heart of the Mascarene Archipelago, between Réunion to the west and Rodrigues Island to the east.
Mauritius is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. Mauritians are primarily descended from Indian laborers, Chinese traders, African slaves, and Dutch, French, and British settlers. Today, this creates a diverse yet peaceful community that celebrates all religions and ethnicities.
Surrounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, it is a paradise for sun, beach, water sport and cultural enthusiasts.
This spectacular destination is home to around 700 plant species, rare birds such as the pink pigeon and kestrel as well as a myriad marine species that make scuba diving and snorkelling one of the country’s most renowned activities.
